I have continuously struggled with the idea of the "Unseen". If I can't recognize something with one of the five senses (Site, Sound, Feel, Smell, Taste), I typically go through some introspective mental gymnastics to feel comfortable buying into the concept. I say typically because for some reason, I have never been uncomfortable about the idea of electricity. I can't tell you how electricity functions, I can't smell it or taste it. If I feel it, it's a shock (Pun Intended)! I can hear some of the results as in a doorbell and see the results when I flick a switch and a light bulb goes on.
Consequently, if something is powered by electricity I have an unquestioning mindset that it will operate once I turn on the switch, even though I have zero clue concerning how it will function. Why can it be that a natural born skeptic of all things unseen accepts the notion of electricity without question and just what does this have to do with bodybuilding success?
The easy answer - since birth I was mentally conditioned to accept the notion of electricity. I am surrounded by countless examples of the outcomes of electricity and accept it's presence, even though I can't really tell you a thing about it or demonstrate it! My subconscious mind has recognized the existence of electricity and overrides my conventional conscious mental conditioning to be suspicious.
When it comes to a bodybuilding program, similar to electricity, we are surrounded by examples of the outcomes, but just how many of us understand what's going on inside our bodies?
There is an emotional link between bodybuilding training and the desire to quit it or embrace it. Essentially, there is a normal chemical response produced by our bodies to protect us from activities our bodies recognize as harmful to us or that we don't enjoy. Our mind interprets those responses as bad feelings or emotions. When this link is created, merely the thought of the action generates negative emotions that create powerful feelings causing you to quit or delay the activity. This should be considered common sense, but the fitness industry considers it to be laziness.
Some people enjoy varying degrees of pain brought on by assorted scenarios. Individuals that are drawn to bodybuilding exercise frequently are those that respond positively to stimulus that creates negative emotions in most people. They get pleasure from gasping and panting while running on a treadmill. With legs wobbling from exhaustion, they get an emotional lift from pressing themselves further. Finally, after they collapse from exhaustion they declare they just had "the best workout of their lives".
Most individuals will never put themselves through so much. Those that do experience a feeling of pride in finishing the bodybuilding routine because of its' difficulty, possess a sense of certainty that their physical dominance is achieved because they can complete it while most others are too soft and without the drive needed.
The bottom line for most people is that these extreme bodybuilding programs simply don't work because they will not stay with them. They do not respond with positive feelings to the excessive training required. Long term success demands a mindset that perceives positive emotions where most people will perceive negative ones.
